Smarkets Betting Reviews: Is Smarkets safe?

#21 of 21 Bookmakers

The Smarkets organisation describes itself as an ‘investment platform’ that is focused on the sports industry. Savvy investors have been enjoyed Smarkets experiences since its inception in 2008.

The company is based in central London, and is regulated in the British Isles by the UK Gambling Commission. Outside of the UK, Smarkets operates under the jurisdiction of the Malta Gaming Authority.

The Smarkets experience is unique because it applies investment strategies that are usually associated with the finance industry to the sporting industry. The products offered by this operator include: in-play, horse racing, football, tennis, baseball, and a range of other sports. Unlike many other providers, Smarkets also takes investments on politics.

Website & Usability

01 Website & Usability

Website and usability

The Smarkets website has a very clean, clear professional gloss to it – which is not surprising given the fact that it is the brainchild of financial and software professionals. Unlike traditional bookmakers that take bets on sports and various other niches, Smarkets presents a simple, straightforward layout. It is easy to see all the available markets at a glance, and you don’t have to rummage about to find out about the rate of commission or the sign up page. If you’re new to investing money on sports, the Smarkets site is a great choice if you find the more traditional websites more than a little confusing.

Smarkets has a more serious feel to it than other providers, which reflects the fact that this is a site that is based on financial investment principles. If you’re looking for a provider that is all about the fun in terms of jumping graphics, bright colours and quirky characters – you’d be better off going for a site like Paddy Power. If, however, you like the fact that Smarkets takes your money seriously, with a view to making a decent profit – you can’t fail to be impressed by the executive feel of this website.

Betting Offers

02 Betting Offers

If you’re looking for a wide choice of markets, Smarkets is one of the best online sports investment sites. You can choose from: in-play, horse racing, football, tennis, baseball, basketball, cricket, handball, ice hockey, motorsports and politics. Let’s look at some of those in more detail…

In-play

There are four sports covered by Smarkets for in-play betting, including football, horse racing, tennis, basketball and cricket. At the time of compiling this Smarkets experience report, there were 18 in-play games of football available for members – including teams like Turkey, Belgium and the Czech Republic, to name just a small selection. If you’re keen on the thrills of in-play betting, Smarkets will fit the bill very well. One small flaw is that there are only four sports included in their in-play offering – which means that if you want more variety in terms of markets in this sector, you may be better joining another site.

Horse racing

If you’re keen to make money out of horse racing, this is a great provider to choose. Our test found that there are well over 80 different races to bet on at any given time – so you have lots of choice when it comes to where and when you can put your money on your favourite horses and events.

Football

Just like the horse racing provision at Smarkets, there is a huge amount of games covered by this operator – so it shouldn’t be too hard to find what you’re looking for. If you’re not sure which game to go for, there’s a handy tab to the right of the dedicated football page that lists details of all the biggest and most popular events – perfect for newbies who need a little help.

Politics

There are two sections for investing in politics at Smarkets: one that covers the United Kingdom, and another that encompasses world politics. Options for betting on within UK politics include: Brexit, Scottish Independence, UK party leaders, and General Elections. On the world politics page, you can invest your cash in outcomes regarding Donald Trump and matters that are European. Not many other operators offer as much choice with politics betting as Smarkets, and several don’t have this provision at all. If you want to use your political knowledge to make some money, Smarkets is probably a really good bet.

03 Bonus

Bonuses a weakness for Smarkets

Smarkets experiences are not focused on betting offers. This is not a provider that offers a whole range of bonuses and ways to place free bets. However, there is a good deal on offer for new customers only – when you sign up, you can claim a free bet of £10. The real draw with Smarkets, as opposed to other operators, is the low commission that they take on your cash. At just 2%, this compares extremely favourably with most other bookmakers in the industry. If you are keen to use your sports and political knowledge to make some real money, the lack of betting offers here shouldn’t put you off. If, however, you love to be able to access lots of rewards and extra bonuses throughout your time as a member of one of these sites, you’d be better off choosing an organisation like Bet365.

To be able to activate your welcome bonus, you need to sign up via the registration page. This is a really quick and easy process, as there is little information required before you can get started. The fact that so little detail is required makes Smarkets easier to get started with than some other providers. All you need to supply is your email address, a password, your date of birth, country of residence and your currency. From there, it’s just a matter of ticking a box to say you agree with the terms and conditions – and you’re good to go!

You need to put some cash into your new account before you can get your bonus, and it needs to be at least £20. Once you’ve done that, your £10 free bet will appear on your account. If you make a loss up to a maximum of £10, your initial stake will be refunded – which is quite generous in comparison with many of the more mainstream bookmakers. However, the minimum deposit of £20 might be a little steep if you’re just starting out and want to be a little more cautious. If that is the case, a provider like Betway might be better – they have a minimum deposit of £10 to access their welcome offer of a deposit match.

Avoid Skrill and Neteller if bonus hunting

It’s worth bearing in mind that if you’re making your first deposit via Skrill or Neteller, you will not qualify for the bonus. You should also note that if you are able to activate the bonus on joining Smarkets, it must be used within three months of becoming a member. After this time period, your bonus will expire and you will not be able to access it.

Players outside of the UK should check T&Cs

If you are a resident of the United Kingdom, you won’t have any problem with accessing the bonus at Smarkets. However, if you live elsewhere, it is worth checking if you are in a qualifying country. The following countries are excluded from investing with Smarkets: Australia, France, Hong Kong, Switzerland, China, South Africa, Denmark, Czech Republic, Belgium, Turkey, the United States, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.

Odds & Limits

04 Odds & Limits

Betting limits vary depending on payment method

The minimum and maximum amounts that you can put into your Smarkets account are dependent on which payment method you use. We will describe the various payment methods available later in this review, but it’s worth checking out the limits before you make your first deposit. This is especially important if you are keen to stick to a budget, and if you want to indulge in betting that is a little more high stakes. If you want a simple minimum and maximum amount for every bet without having to worry about which payment method you’re using, you may be best to venture elsewhere. If, however, you like a choice and to be in more in control of the betting process – Smarkets is a good option.

If you’re new to betting on sports or political markets, you may find the range of odds (and the formats they appear in) on other bookmakers’ sites to be rather confusing. There are varying odds for every single market and every single game, race, match or event – and it can be a bit of a headache trying to figure them all out, especially if you’re just getting started. With Smarkets, there’s simply a flat 2% commission across all markets – so it’s easy to work out how much you can pick up in payouts if your predictions prove to be correct. This simplicity makes it very easy to invest your cash with Smarkets – and can prove to be very lucrative too.

Customer Service

05 Customer Service

Small but friendly customer service team

Smarkets is an organisation that is keen to provide a comprehensive range of assistance to its members. There is a link on the home page for a dedicated ‘help centre’. The help centre features a whole range of options for getting all the information you might need, and there is also a ‘contact us’ button for any questions that remain unanswered. Topics that are covered in detailed sections include the following: betting education; betting on Smarkets; your account; account verification; payments; bonus and promotions; responsible gambling; betting rules; and terms and conditions.

There is a choice of ways to contact the customer service team at Smarkets. You can email the team; contact them via phone and live chat; and write to Smarkets via post. This operator has a bit of an edge over most others in terms of customer service – as you can also ask for help or get more information by tweeting their friendly team. Responses are prompt and helpful from staff who genuinely care about your Smarkets experiences.

Payments

06 Payments

Variety of ways to pay with Smarkets

There’s a reasonable choice of ways to make payments that compares well with the average sports deposit and withdrawal amounts. You can go for any of the following:

  • Visa debit
  • Neteller
  • Skrill
  • Visa credit card
  • Mastercard/Eurocard
  • Solo/Maestro
  • Bank transfer

If you’re looking to avoid fees for making deposits and withdrawals, Smarkets is a good choice as all its payment methods are free – with the exception of Visa credit card or Mastercard. For using these, you’ll be charged 2.5 %. All the payment methods can be used to credit your account instantly, excluding a Smarkets bank transfer – which takes between three and five business days to appear on your account.

If you use Visa credit or debit, Solo/Maestro, Mastercard or bank transfer for making your deposits, there is a £10 minimum. If you choose to go for Neteller, there is a £20 minimum and a maximum daily amount of £5K. With Skrill, there is a £10 minimum and a maximum daily amount of £5K in terms of deposits.

For withdrawing from your Smarkets account, all payment methods are free apart from the bank transfer – which will cost £10. Most take between one and six business days to reach you, with Neteller and Skrill being the fastest at between one and two business days. If you want to collect your winnings fast, these are the best options with Smarkets. However, don’t forget that members using these payment choices are excluded from the welcome bonus – which we think is a little unfair.

Secure and safe - the Smarkets way!

Smarkets is an operator that you can trust, as the organisation operates within the bounds of regulations set out by the UK Gambling Commission. For members outside of the United Kingdom, protection is offered in the form of adherence to the rules as decreed by the Malta Gaming Authority.

Smarkets has developed a formidable presence in the media over the past few years, having gained the attention of a number of highly respected outlets. These included: the Telegraph, the Independent, CNN, the Wall Street Journal, Business Insider and many more. CEO Jason Trost appeared on BBC television to give detailed insights into how Smarkets protects the details of all its members as part of a panel of experts. This offers considerable reassurance to members, and underlines how Smarkets is completely professional and determined to provide an excellent service that people can rely on.

Mobile Application

08 Mobile Application

Mobile gaming available with Smarkets

If you’re into mobile betting, Smarkets has got you covered. Whether you have an Apple or Android phone, you can easily access the Smarkets app. The app is easy to use, with a comprehensive search facility so that you can easily find what you’re looking for. If you like to keep up to date with how your bets are progressing, whether they are on your favourite sports or the outcomes of political events – the Smarkets app is very useful and convenient. As a sports betting app, this compares well with what is offered by other providers.

Smarkets views are very much dependent on the kind of provider you’re looking for. If you want a provider that is a little bit different from all the rest, and is considered one of the best online sports and politics betting provider – Smarkets is an excellent choice. It’s a little more serious than other more traditional bookmakers, but if you’re serious about making a profit – you will enjoy using either the website or the app.
