The Lotter Lottery Reviews: Is The Lotter safe?

#4 of 5 Lottery Providers

We are sure many people have mentally spent massive lottery winnings but it can be frustrating that you cannot get hold of tickets for the biggest lotteries in the world if you are not in the country. That's where online companies such as The Lotter come in. You can find all the biggest jackpots, buy official tickets and check the winning numbers. You can even join a syndicate to have a share in even more tickets to give yourself greater chances of winning.

The Lotter is operated by The Lotter Enterprises Limited based in Belize and was founded in 2002 to offer people the chance to buy lottery tickets from around the world. The main company is officially licensed by the Government of Belize with credit card payments being processed by Aikmina Services Limited based in Cyprus.

The company offers an independent ticket buying service from its 20 or so offices worldwide. After one of its players won the $6.4 million Oregon Megabucks jackpot, the Oregon Lottery conducted The Lotter reviews of its services and decided the procedures as handled by the local office are an approved method of buying lottery tickets. Basically, the local office buys tickets from official outlets on your behalf that you can then see online. They take a handling fee from you when you make your purchase so you don't have to pay them any commission. They also have discounts so you can get 50% off some tickets, which is a very generous offer.

Since its launch The Lotter says it has paid out more than $50 million in prizes including five big wins of $1 million or more. It buys tickets on 49 lotteries including Mega Millions in the US, EuroJackpot in Europe, SuperStar in Italy, Powerball in the UK, Powerball Lotto in Australia, the UK Lotto and EuroMillions throughout Europe.

How the Lotter Lottery review works

Buying lottery tickets is a familiar concept to most people, however being able to participate in international lotteries over the internet is far newer thing! Whilst some sites let you bet on the outcome, others facilitate your participation in the draw itself. If you're looking to start out in the world of online lotteries then it's important to have as much information as possible. In our The Lotter review we will be testing how easy and secure it is to buy tickets as well as giving The Lotter ratings for its website, services, security and licences. If you have experience playing with The Lotter then leave your own reviews and ratings to help others make the right choice for them. To learn more about how online lottery sites work, make sure to check out our Lottery Provider Comparison.

Website & Usability

01 Website & Usability

The Lotter website – how easy is it to use?

The front page is clear and concise with the big prize draws such as the Mega Millions prize of $96 million being in a large typeface to draw you in. You can see the biggest lotteries with the current jackpot plus a clock counting down the seconds until the draw.

There are links available to play online, join syndicates, see previous results and read about previous winners. You can also create bundles where you combine personal and syndicate entries. It is also easy to see how to login or sign up for Lotter - including the chance to sign up with Facebook - and access your account.
The front page has a plain white background which means the main information about buying tickets and the jackpots stands out brightly.

We like the simple way it shows how you can play including a short video explaining how The Lotter works. You can also scroll down to see how much has been paid out in prizes - an impressive $56 million when we last looked - plus names of The Lotter winners and testimonials. The Lotter also has tabs at the side with special offers and a link to the Lotter live chat.
The Lotter looks clear, it is easy to find things and has all the information about the top lotteries, previous winning numbers, contact details and lottery news. From the homepage you are just two clicks away from buying your ticket – click the game you want, pick your numbers and press the play button.

03 Bonus

A reasonable bonus and good VIP club

The Lotter has special offers with 50% off Powerball or Mega Millions tickets as well as a 20% discount for multi-draw of 10 draws or a subscription where every 10th ticket is free for any lottery. It is important to remember that these discounts are on the Lotter’s service charge. The price of the lottery ticket is fixed and The Lotter purchases the ticket at official lottery prices.
Official lottery tickets are bought on your behalf and then scanned to your account
a copy of your ticket is shown in your account with your number selection and any relevant draw information. Once the lottery has been drawn then commission-free winnings are transferred directly to you. Other providers, such as Coral Lottery and Ladbrokes Lottery operate by allowing you to simply place money on the outcome of a draw, meaning greater variation on the price of your bet.

As well as The Lotter bonus, other promotions include VIP points where you are offered discounts as well as $10 in bonus money for you and $5 for your friend when you invite a friend to play. We were a bit confused by the discounts as, at first glance, it looked as though it related to the ticket price and not just the service charge. Once this was cleared up though, everything was straightforward.

In our The Lotter lottery reviews of services and bonuses, we feel there isn't really much The Lotter can offer because it cannot give away free games or many discounts. If you like free offers, then read our Lottery Bonus Comparison to see where to go for the best deals - you may be best to select a provider with several different branches to their business, allowing you to take advantage of a variety of bonuses. However the Lotter VIP is a good deal for frequent users. The VIP club offers savings on the top draws, promotions and offers as well as 24/7 priority lottery assistance.

04 Chances

Possible stakes and winning odds at The Lotter

The Lotter differs from some other gambling sites offering lottery bets in that you actually take part in the lottery from anywhere in the world. With other companies, such as Ladbrokes and Coral you are betting with the company on which numbers will be drawn. The sportsbook will give you odds for your numbers and you can stake what you wish – it can even be less than the cost of the lottery ticket because you are not actually buying a ticket, just betting on which numbers will be drawn.

With The Lotter, the ticket prices are set by the lottery organisers. It then adds on a service charge for buying the tickets on your behalf. This can be quite hefty but then it offers a discount of up to 50% off this charge. For example, EuroMillions tickets cost £2.50 but The Lotter charges £4.80 and Mega Millions tickets are $1 (about 80p sterling) but The Lotter charges £2.05.

If you click on each game, you will see information about the jackpot for that week, how to play and when the draw is made. This information also includes the overall chances of winning a prize.
Payouts up to $2,500 are paid into your account but large prizes, including the jackpot, will mean you need to travel to the country where the lottery is held. Taxes are also payable on winnings in some countries, such as the USA where the Mega Millions lottery winnings are subject to both State and Federal taxes.

No Commission

Plenty of information available to help you

You can subscribe to the Smart which shows the lotteries offering the best cost-benefit ratio taking into account the odds of winning, jackpot size, ticket price, and taxes. So although the USA Mega Millions may offer the best jackpot, the Australian Powerball will give you a better chance of winning.

There is plenty of information about each lottery which has boosted our The Lotter rating and, although the service charge seems steep before the discount is applied, it is worth it if you really want to take part in a particular lottery.

Customer Service

05 Customer Service

Room for improvement at Customer Service

For our The Lotter review research we tried to contact the Lotter live chat – which is theoretically available in 15 languages. We received a message saying that all the agents were busy serving other customers and to leave a message with contact details so The Lotter would get back to us. This happened every time we clicked on live chat during our The Lotter lottery reviews so we're not too sure how many agents are working there. However, they did send an email to answer our query within 90 minutes, so at least you will get a quick response even if it isn't immediate.

You can also contact The Lotter customer service by phone, fax, or email with replies given within 24 hours in 15 languages via the Support link.
We expected to see a USA number or a number for the The Lotter Enterprises Ltd office in Belize among the available options, but there wasn’t one. The lack of these numbers coupled with no support available from live chat when we tried has disappointed us and so our The Lotter rating could improve.

06 Payments

A good variety of payment options available

The Lotter reviews of its deposits & withdrawals state it takes Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Diners Club International, Skrill, Neteller, Sofort, WebMoney, Deal, paysafecard, Trustly, paybyMOBILE, and bank transfers among other e-wallets and ways to pay. All payments are processed instantly without any fee. You can use various currencies with US$, £ and € being the main ones.

You just need to sign in or register for a The Lotter account, put in your payment details, click deposit, select payment method, how much you wish to put in and click the deposit button.
Withdrawals can be made into Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club, Discover, Skrill, Neteller or bank transfers. The minimum withdrawal is $1 with a maximum of between $1,000 and $50,000. This depends on the method used and bank transfers are subject to fees.. All other methods are free and take between one to three days to be processed.

These all seem industry standard, although The Lotter takes a wide variety of payment methods for deposits, presumably so that you can play from anywhere in the world. If you are travelling, then PayPal is probably the best method to use.

Security and Licensing

07 Security and Licensing

How safe and secure is The Lotter?

We take security very seriously here at yourate, and ensure that all of the providers in our rundown of the top lottery providers employ the right protocols. The Lotter says player security and confidentiality are paramount and they have measures in place to ensure customers' financial data and information is protected at all times. The Lotter uses GeoTrust 128 SSL bit security and HTTPS to encrypt all of the pages on the site, and is monitored regularly by Return Path. The mobile apps also have the same level of security as the main website.

Every email from The Lotter has been verified by Return Path as being from an approved IP address and free of any malware, fraud or phishing.

Responsible gambling is a priority

There are also links to Gamblers Anonymous and GamCare for help if you feel your gambling is getting out of control. However, The Lotter reviews show it is not licensed with the Gambling Commission or similar authorities so there isn't the additional security regarding its reliability and your finances that you will find with most of the top lottery sites. It is registered in Belize and has been operating since 2002, so the length of service is reassuring. Also, the ticket purchasing service has been examined and validated by the Oregon Lottery.

The Lotter says the pay-out system is fully automated and audited regularly. You own the tickets and The Lotter does not have any legal claim to it. The Terms of Service, which is a legally binding document, proof of purchase via the confirmation email and scanned copy of your ticket shows the ticket legally belongs to you. The Lotter reviews its security measures regularly, and you should be in good hands, but the lack of overseeing governing body means that we can’t give it a high rating in this category.

Mobile Application

08 Mobile Application

Buying tickets from your mobile

You can download The Lotter app from the website or Apple store for your iPhone and iPad or download the Android version. It means you can play lotteries from anywhere in the world directly from your phone or tablet, check results, enter your numbers to see if you have won, buy tickets and win prizes (hopefully!) from anywhere in the world. You can also get jackpot alerts to your phone so you will know instantly if you are in for a prize through The Lotter lottery results service. Basically, anything you can do on the website can also be carried out on the phone.

The Lotter apps are clear with all the information readily available so you can select your game, pick the numbers and buy your ticket. It is available in 15 languages, namely English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish and Swedish. Many of the top lottery apps do not cater for so many languages, so this is a bonus as far as we are concerned.
